FRANKI DODWELL
BIO
Franki studied her undergraduate degreein Jazz Vocal performance at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Through out her degree she would often struggle to find music that she wanted to play so began writing it for herself, working with organisations such as Jazzlines and Birmingham Jazz. After finishing her degree she taught music theory at Bimm University which she loved as it allowed her to explore in detail multiple genres of music that has also been very influential to her work.
Franki was accepted on to the Composition Masters at the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague in 2020 where she studied with Martijn Padding and Guus Janssen, and was then accepted on to the Artist Certificate programme 2022, where she continued to study with Martijn Padding and Trevor Grahl. During this time Franki worked on a many great projects including writing for the Residentie Orkest chosen to write for the opening the Amare building in, the new home of the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague, the Residentie Orkest and the Nederlands Dans Theater. She also wrote for the Signum quartet, Ricciotti Ensemble and the Calefax reed quintet and has also had music performed in the Musica Sacra Festival in Maastricht. In November 2022 she was chosen to take part in Orgel Park educational project with Jacob Lekkerkerker where she composed a new piece for the hyper organ.
Franki was very excited to be awarded Artist in Residence at the British Music Festival Holland in October 2022 as well as winning the Young Composers Pitch at the New Music Conference in November 2022. In June of 2023 she was featured in the national Day of the Composer Festival in Holland as well as having a new work premiered at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht in their classical lunch time concert series. In February 2024 she took part in the International Young Composers Meeting where she was awarded the City of Apledroon commission. On the 25th May Franki premiered her new operetta ‘Ubu RIO’ in the Hague. Most recently she was commissioned to write new piece for the Riccioti Ensemble’s 2024 summer tour ‘Shamrock Shuffle’ and she is very excited to be writing a piece for Prinsjesdag for the Residentie Orkest Brass Ensemble in September 2024.
